Our History

Establishment and Early Years (1837-1938)

  • Inaugurated on 4th November 1837 during the colonial era under the Patronage of Sir Steuart Mckenzie, the Governor of Ceylon.
  • Registered under voluntary societies registration ordinance No. 16 of 1891.
  • Committee appointed in 1918 to consider the establishment of a Home for Elders.
  • Mr. W.H. Pate donated the ‘Randles Hill’ tea factory in 1926.
  • Home for the Elders opened on 12th July 1938 by Sir Andrew Caldecott, Governor of Ceylon.

Evolution and Recognitions (1938-1987)

  • Approved charity status under Section 16A of the Inland Revenue Act in 1963.
  • Incorporated by Act No.2 of 1984 by the Parliament of Sri Lanka.
  • 150th-year anniversary celebrated in 1987 with various tributes and recognitions.

Expansion and Milestones (1989-2005)

  • Lease of a 22-perch land obtained in 1989.
  • Foundation stone laid for Visrama Nivasaya in 1993.
  • Awards conferred in 1993 to the Society’s leaders.
  • Elders Home in Ampitiya inaugurated on 12th November 2002.
  • President transition in 2003, with notable achievements.

Infrastructure Enhancement 

  • Allocation of funds for refurbishing the old factory building and constructing additional facilities.

Continued Growth and Support (2008-2021)

  • Initiatives like the shrine room and cottages at Ampitiya Elders’ Home.
  • Significant donations from individuals, residents, and organizations.
  • Constitution amendment in 2013 and certification under the Protection of the Rights of Elders Act.
  • Ongoing contributions, including the purchase of a generator in 2022.

Recent Developments (2019-2021)

  • Acquisition of land for an Elders’ Village.
  • Investments in fire control equipment, facilities, and a new vehicle.
  • Leadership changes with Mr. E.H.M. Palitha Elkaduwa elected as the new President in 2021.

Legacy and Vision 

  • Heritage preservation with notarial deed updates and municipal registrations.
  • Financial commitments and Fixed Deposit contributions from residents.
  • Constitutional amendments and logo redesign in 2019.

We Are Non Profit Organization

As a non-profit organization, the Kandy Friend-in-need Society is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the elderly and providing crucial support to the community. Our initiatives focus on various projects aimed at improving the living conditions of seniors. Over the years, we have received valuable contributions, grants, and donations from individuals and organizations, enabling us to carry out impactful activities.

Our key areas of focus and accomplishments include:

  1. Elderly Care Homes: We operate Elderly Care Homes in Mulgampola and Ampitiya, providing a safe and supportive environment for seniors. These homes are equipped with modern facilities to ensure the residents’ comfort and well-being.

  2. Community Services: In addition to our care homes, we engage in community services such as day care centers for the elderly. We aim to meet the unique needs of seniors in various capacities, adapting to changing demands.

  3. Infrastructure Development: Through generous donations and grants, we have undertaken significant infrastructure development projects, including the construction of new buildings, shrines, and cottages in our care facilities.

  4. Financial Assistance: We actively seek financial support to fund projects that benefit the elderly. Contributions from individuals, businesses, and organizations have played a crucial role in our ability to carry out our mission.

  5. Constitutional Amendments: To ensure transparency and efficiency, we have periodically reviewed and amended our constitution. This reflects our commitment to maintaining high standards of governance.

  6. Recognition and Awards: Our commitment to excellence has been acknowledged through awards, including being recognized as the best Home for Elders in the Central Province. These accolades motivate us to continue providing quality services.
